One Nation is a workers' party established with the aim of serving the workers and pensioners by initiating legislation to protect their rights, status and personal security in the face of a free market economy. Amir Peretz - the chairman of Israel's large and powerful Histadrut labor union - leads the party. Palestinian StatehoodThe issue of a Palestinian state will be determined as a part of an overall agreement that would provide Israel with peace and security. Peace ProcessOne Nation supports the promotion of a political and security process that will lead to a peace agreement between the Israeli and Palestinian nations that will put an end to the Jewish-Arab conflict and will lead to true peace among all the nations of the region. An improved quality of life for our Palestinian neighbors and cooperation between nations, including support in a balanced economic agreement, will lead to the success of this process. JerusalemThe status of Jerusalem will be determined in future negotiations. Israeli Communities in the Territories (Settlements) The status of the settlements in the territories will be determined as a part of an overall agreement that would provide Israel with peace and security. Demographic IssuesOne Nation is fully supportive of immigrants to Israel and fights for their rights in the workplace as well as their full and speedy integration into the Israeli economy. One Nation favors a limitation on the number of foreign workers allowed into Israel on grounds that it decreases the number of Israeli citizens employed and presents a potential demographic problem as thousands of such workers do not desire to leave Israel even when their work permit has expired. Economy & Social WelfareOne Nation sees as a central goal the narrowing of economic gaps in Israel. The party will attempt to include as wide a population of workers as possible in the framework of collective agreements and to set limits on individual wages or income in order to establish a logical and ethical range between the minimal legal wage and maximal income. One Nation supports the raising of the minimum wage and its proper economic adjustment, and will fight without compromise for the enforcement of the law in this regard. Social gaps also arise from unequal ownership of property. One Nation demands that publicly owned housing, in underprivileged neighborhoods and in development towns, be transferred to the hands of the inhabitants on favorable terms. The party likewise demands of any government the creation of a stock of new public housing in order to aid the homeless. One Nation will promote legislation to broaden the resources of the Institute for Social Security, which is a central instrument in the battle to ensure the rights of the weak and in closing social gaps, and will thwart any attempt to damage its status. Religion & StateThe One Nation party favors acting to increase understanding and rapprochement between the streams and populations that comprise Israeli society and will act wherever possible to narrow the polarization between different populations. One Nation sees religion and tradition as values that are to be respected. The party will work to protect the rights of the religious worker and will oppose any discrimination or coercion, religious or otherwise. |
